Grietje Schepers is a Dutch artist and designer whose work operates at the intersection of art, design, and architecture. Based in Eindhoven, she develops large-scale installations and spatial works that explore the relationship between material, colour, and environment. A graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven, she established her studio shortly after completing her studies in 2008.
Schepers’ practice is defined by a strong engagement with space and perception. Her works often transform architectural environments through the use of colour, light, and material, creating immersive experiences that alter how space is perceived and inhabited. By working at scale, she invites viewers to physically engage with her installations, positioning the body as an active participant within the work.
Material experimentation plays a central role in her approach. Schepers frequently works with unconventional and reclaimed materials, including felt, metal, and textile, combining these with contemporary production techniques. This combination allows her to develop works that are both visually striking and materially complex, where surface, structure, and function are closely intertwined.
Her installations often balance aesthetic presence with functional qualities. In some works, material choices contribute to acoustic effects, such as sound absorption, reinforcing the connection between visual experience and spatial use. This integration of sensory and functional elements reflects her broader interest in how environments can be shaped through design.
Recurring within her work is an exploration of scale and transformation. Projects such as Ellipt investigate the impact of geometric form and colour on spatial perception, while works like Sleeping Gold introduce movement and interaction, creating installations that respond to the presence of the viewer. In her Crawling series, reclaimed materials are reconfigured into sculptural objects, further extending her exploration of material reuse and transformation.
Schepers’ work has been presented in exhibition and design contexts, where her installations are recognized for their ability to merge conceptual thinking with spatial experience. Through her practice, she contributes to a broader dialogue on how art and design can shape environments, combining visual impact with sensory and functional considerations.
