Sona Asemani

Sona Asemani (*1994, Hormozgan, Iran) is an Iranian painter and embroidery artist currently living and working in the Netherlands. A self-taught artist, she initially pursued a BA in economics from ATU University of Tehran, graduating in 2017. However, her true passion for art led her to start her professional career in painting and textile design. After starting with acrylic paints and participating in her first group exhibition in Tehran in 2018, Sona shifted her focus to embroidery and textile art in 2019. During that period, she successfully sold over 150 pieces of her embroidery worldwide. However, her love for painting remained paramount, leading her to transition to oil painting when she moved to the Netherlands in 2020.

Asemani's work is heavily influenced by themes of gender inequality and freedom, often celebrating femininity and challenging societal beauty standards. Her art is filled with vivid colors and surreal representations of women, drawing inspiration from Persian miniature figures and symbols. She uses these references to explore personal histories and experiences, depicting liberated female figures that embody confidence and natural beauty.
