Preta Wolzak

Preta Wolzak is a versatile artist whose work spans various disciplines of applied arts, always imbued with a deeper message. Known for her unique, vibrant creations, Wolzak blends aesthetic appeal with critical reflections on pressing global issues. Her series on climate change features playful, colorful scenes set against arctic landscapes, symbolizing humanity's reckless treatment of the planet. In these works, she likens the world to an amusement park, where the unchecked exploitation of natural resources is now encroaching upon the last pristine regions of the Earth—the North and South Poles.

In her recent series, Fighting Females, Wolzak sheds light on historically overlooked women who made significant contributions to society. Through intricately crafted portraits made from leather, embroidery thread, wool, and glow-in-the-dark twine, she celebrates these unsung heroines, recognizing their fight for a better world.

Creative Journey
Wolzak studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam from 1986 to 1991, focusing on Monumental Design. In the years following her graduation, she worked primarily on commissioned projects, designing furniture, exhibitions, private and corporate interiors, and producing illustrations for websites and book covers. Her versatility also extended to jewelry design, launching her brand Fortblink in 2008.

In 2013, Wolzak's focus shifted more towards her autonomous visual art. She opened her creative space, Old Fort On Dun, in Amsterdam, where she showcases her artwork, jewelry, and works by other artists. Since 2014, she has devoted herself entirely to her independent artistic practice, creating thought-provoking works that challenge viewers to reflect on environmental issues, gender equality, and historical narratives.
