Christina de Korte
Christina de Korte
Christina de Korte (*1997, Meliskerke, The Netherlands) is an emerging artist whose versatile work merges her passion for textiles, patterns, and the vibrant use of colours with a deep interest in cultural narratives. She holds a BA in Fine Arts from the HKU University of the Arts Utrecht and a degree in Language and Culture Studies from Utrecht University, both of which inform her multidisciplinary practice. Currently based in Utrecht, De Korte's artistic journey has taken her across the globe, including an artist residency in Cairo, Egypt.
Cultural Collecting and Visual Storytelling
Growing up as the child of a traveler, De Korte developed a fascination with collecting objects, souvenirs, and cultural stories from around the world. These collections serve as the foundation of her art, beginning with her photography project Thuis (Dutch for "home") and evolving into large-scale, immersive installations. Her works often resemble vibrant textile markets, rich with patterns and cultural references. De Korte frequently incorporates materials like Vlisco fabrics and market photographs, weaving them into layered narratives that explore personal memory, cultural identity, and global exchange.
A Fusion of Art and Research
De Korte’s practice is deeply rooted in research, particularly in non-Western art forms, religion, and textile history. Her time in Egypt, where she studied the local dialect and traditional artistic techniques, enriched her creative process. This academic insight into textile and cultural history feeds directly into her artwork, resulting in thoughtful, detailed explorations of cultural exchange, storytelling, and the intersection of art and material culture. Through her work, De Korte crafts a unique visual language that blends personal experience with the diverse global traditions she encounters.
