Stakes High
Basketball, plaster, gesso, glass beads.
This basketball depicts M45, a star cluster visible to the naked eye some 444 light years away, made up of more than 1,000 stars. They’re commonly referred to as the Pleiades, daughters of Atlas and Pleione in Greek mythology, but this cluster has many names and plays an important role in countless cultures, embodying both functional and symbolic significance.
In this work I merged my own interpretation of this classic astronomical iconography with one of my favourite songs: Stakes is High by De La Soul. The legendary track, produced by J Dilla, signifies an all or nothing moment, a plea for positive vibes and vibrations. Taking it as a creative mantra, this sculpture represents a personal reminder to stay true to myself, avoiding shortcuts in the creative process and having fun assembling new constellations.
