Guiding the Future | No Waste

7 September to 25 November 2023

Besides representing many female artists and designers, Rademakers Gallery has had sustainability as an important pillar from the very beginning. Meanwhile, social awareness is growing and thinking about a more responsible use of materials within the art and design world is becoming more and more obvious. The gallery's artists and designers explore and experiment with reuse of materials, they think about reducing waste and how nature and humans can work together. This year's exhibition, from 7 September to 25 November under the heading Guiding the Future, clearly shows where the creative makers are now.

Some artists depict awareness and behavioural change in brushstrokes or with luminous textiles, while others show us the beauty and value of what we classify as waste. Mae Engelgeer is one such textile designer, known for her aesthetic tapestries and rugs with extraordinary use of colour, gradients, compositions and patterns. She developed new designs especially for Rademakers Gallery that arise in a more intuitive way from researching colours and residual materials in her studio, or what she can do with the woven miniature pieces that are always left over when she has not used the full width of the weaving machine to weave a custom-made 'Class Waffle panel'. A good example of this is 'Embued Blue' a wool jacquard-woven unique mini panel with fringes along the edges. The intense natural blue hues are achieved by hand-dipping the fabric several times in an indigo bath, adding depth to the gridded texture.
