Grietje Schepers
Grietje Schepers is a Dutch artist and designer whose work masterfully bridges art, design, and architecture within the context of Dutch design. A 2008 graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven, Schepers quickly established her own studio in Eindhoven, where she focuses on creating large-scale, immersive installations that redefine spatial and sensory experiences. Known for her bold use of color, innovative materials, and dynamic interplay with light, her work transforms environments, inviting viewers into a reimagined world that embodies the experimental spirit of Dutch design.
Artistic Vision
Schepers approaches design conceptually, expanding small ideas into monumental gestures. She plays with scale, proportion, and materials to create environments that invite viewers to engage with their surroundings in new ways. Her installations blur the lines between functionality and visual art, making use of unconventional materials like natural felt, thrifted metals, and repurposed textiles, often paired with cutting-edge production techniques. Her works aim to evoke wonder, combining visual aesthetics with spatial functionality, often adding sound-dampening qualities that suit large spaces.
Notable Projects
One of her most iconic works, Ellipt, uses geometrically intricate shapes and vibrant colors to create light installations that alter viewers’ perceptions of space. Sleeping Gold, another significant piece, explores the relationship between humans and objects through a “breathing” heap of gold that invites interaction and reflection. Her experimental approach is also evident in her work with reclaimed materials, turning discarded metals into sculptural furniture pieces in her Crawling series.
Exhibitions
Grietje Schepers’ work has been exhibited internationally and has been featured in several important cultural events and institutions, including MC's Mindgames in The Hague, where her installation "Sleeping Gold 2.0" was a standout piece. Her projects have also been shown in design fairs like Heimtextil 2020, where her innovations in sustainable design were highlighted alongside other leading designers.
