Overview

Malin Ryberg

Malin Ryberg is a Stockholm-based visual artist, whose creative practice blends the mystical and the familiar. Living on one of the many islands in her hometown of Stockholm, Sweden, Malin shares her life and studio with her beloved dog Buffy. Her artistic journey has taken her far beyond Sweden, with a significant part of her adult life spent in the Netherlands, where she developed her artistic skills. She holds a joint degree from the Royal Academy of the Arts in The Hague and the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, two prestigious institutions known for fostering experimental and innovative artists.

Artistic Vision and Themes

Malin Ryberg’s work transcends the obvious and invites viewers into alternate realities. Her abstract landscapes, characters, and intangible emotions reflect a blend of the familiar and the alien, creating visual worlds that blur the line between reality and the unreal. Her art is steeped in themes of mysticism, folklore, and fairytales, as she delves into the concepts of memory, nature, and self-actualization. These thematic threads allow her to explore what lies beyond the visible world, questioning and expanding our understanding of what is real.

Process and Intuition

Central to Malin’s artistic practice is the role of intuition. She considers herself a painter who thinks through painting, using the medium as a way to stay connected to the subconscious. By working intuitively, she navigates through layers of abstract thought and emotion, translating them into her characteristic visual language. This method allows her to remain deeply engaged with her own inner world, while simultaneously inviting viewers to explore their own responses to her dream-like compositions.

Connection to Nature and Memory

Ryberg’s work often reflects a contemplation of nature and memory, drawing parallels between personal reflection and the timelessness of the natural world. By incorporating elements of folklore and natural forms, her pieces create a dialogue between the internal and external, inviting audiences to reconsider their own relationship with reality and imagination.

With her unique blend of mysticism, memory, and intuitive creation, Malin Ryberg stands as a distinct voice in contemporary visual art, constantly probing the boundaries between what we perceive as real and what lies just beyond our reach.
