Mariekke Jansen

Mariekke Jansen is a Dutch designer recognized for her sustainable approach to product design, particularly through her innovative use of wool. Based in the Netherlands, Mariekke focuses on reducing waste by repurposing wool, a material that is often discarded despite its many beneficial properties. She is passionate about textile crafts, experimenting with various techniques such as tufting and felting to create unique and functional pieces.

One of her signature creations is the Ida Lounge Chair, which exemplifies her commitment to sustainability and innovative design. The chair is made using high-quality wool waste and a specialized folding technique, where the wool filling and cover are folded together to create a strong backrest without the need for additional materials. This method not only enhances the chair’s durability but also highlights wool's natural ability to spring back to its original shape. The design of the chair prioritizes longevity, with an option to replace the cover while reusing the wool filling, further extending the product's lifespan.

Mariekke’s work not only serves as functional furniture but also stands as a statement against the excessive waste of wool in the Netherlands. Her philosophy is encapsulated in the motto: "What I stand for is what I sit on", reflecting her belief in the potential of wool as a sustainable alternative to synthetic materials.
