Overview

Pedro Matias

Pedro Matias (*1984, Lisbon) is an artist, researcher, and filmmaker currently based in the Netherlands. Known for his multifaceted practice that spans across mediums such as film, performance, and conceptual art, Matias creates immersive environments that explore themes of identity, body politics, and eco-feminism. His work operates in what he calls "liminal spaces of regeneration," exploring the boundaries between the familiar and the stranger.

Matias holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam and a Master’s degree in Philosophy (Aesthetics) from the New University of Lisbon. His education informs his artistic practice, which critically engages with new materialist theories, (queer) vitalism, and ecological awareness. His projects often investigate the performativity of the body and its entanglements with the environment, aiming to create supportive structures for queer and trans bodies, both human and non-human.

Matias' work has been presented internationally, including at institutions like Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea in Portugal, Het Hem in the Netherlands, and Haus der Elektronischen Künste (HEK) in Switzerland. He is also a co-founder of the Driewieler Collectief and the Iridescent Institute of Desire, a research network focused on collaborative practices and challenging stable structures.
