Studio Rik ten Velden

Overview

Studio Rik ten Velden, based in Leiden, Netherlands, is renowned for creating furniture and lighting designs that blend functionality with artistic expression. Established by Rik ten Velden, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, the studio emphasizes innovation through material research and experimental production techniques. Ten Velden’s designs often draw on natural forms and maritime influences, seen in his "Knotted" collection, which was inspired by traditional knotting techniques he learned at the Maritime Museum in Rotterdam. This collection includes striking pieces like the Knotted Lamp, constructed from a single rope, embodying both rustic and refined aesthetics.

The studio's notable "Sisu" light sculptures capture Ten Velden’s approach to form and material, featuring cast resin frames and interchangeable front panels. These pieces, created with sustainability in mind, use molds that allow repeated use, minimizing waste. Named after the Finnish concept of inner resilience, “Sisu” sculptures incorporate ambient lighting that enhances their fluid forms, with multiple front options such as satin and acrylic to create dynamic visual effects
