Mae Engelgeer
Mae Engelgeer
Mae Engelgeer (*1982) is a distinguished Dutch textile designer celebrated for her innovative approach to textile art. Based in the Netherlands, Engelgeer is an alumna of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute, where she specialized in Textile Design, and later earned a Master’s in Applied Arts from the prestigious Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam. Her work exemplifies Dutch design through its unique blend of craftsmanship and contemporary aesthetics, showcasing a deep commitment to experimentation with traditional techniques. Engelgeer’s textiles evoke a sense of luxury and tactility, merging modern design principles with a refined, tactile quality that resonates with the hallmark sophistication of Dutch design.
Artistic Vision
Engelgeer's work is characterized by subtle color palettes, geometric patterns, and the delicate balance between contrasting materials. Her designs often combine soft pastels with bold pops of color, resulting in visually striking and tactile compositions. She draws from forgotten weaving techniques and brings them into contemporary design, producing textiles that are not only functional but also serve as pieces of art. Her works embody the ethos of modern Dutch design: clean, minimal, yet deeply layered in concept and craft.
Innovations in Textile Design
Engelgeer’s collections are produced at the renowned TextielLab in Tilburg, where she redefines the boundaries of textile production by integrating materials like mohair, merino wool, alpaca, and cotton into her designs. Her creations span a variety of home and fashion products, including rugs, blankets, cushions, and wall tapestries, often blurring the line between art and design. Each piece reflects her unique style—an elegant interplay of textures, structure, and composition that transforms spaces.
Collaborations and Impact
Beyond her personal collections, Mae Engelgeer has collaborated with international brands, working on projects that range from textile products and furniture design to large-scale installations and public artworks. She has gained global recognition for her ability to merge sustainability with luxurious aesthetics, and her work is showcased in major design exhibitions worldwide.
